About the project:
Following a chance meeting on a train, Prof Peter Green from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Manchester embarked on a collaboration with Steve Pickett, Education Director at The Hallé to create an amazing musical instrument that combined creative engineering and social responsibility.
The project team quickly identified supporting partners including National Instruments, Maxon Motor and the Science and Engineering Education Research and Innovation Hub (SEERIH) within the University. The project was pitched to the University Knowledge Exchange Team, resulting in funding via the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) Outreach Fund and leveraged support from project partners.
Following the award of funding, Dr Hassan Hakim Khalili was recruited as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to oversee the technical development, supervising a team of University apprentices to produce a wondrous instrument capable of engaging any community group that The Hallé work with, from early years to dementia patients.
Engaging primary pupils
This suite of three lesson episodes have been written to enable pupils to respond creatively to the Halléoojamaflipaphone. They are designed to inspire curiosity, discussion and collaboration between pupils and teachers, and to encourage an appreciation of how science and engineering come together to make a difference in the world around us.

1. Make it, Test it!
Children will be able to work scientifically by doing a comparative investigation - to plan an enquiry, recognising and controlling variables where necessary and to pose a scientifi c question• to determine the difference between an evaluation and a conclusion
Children will learn: to associate sound with vibration; to find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it; to construct a simple circuit including cells.
2. Make it, Make it Useful!
Children will be able to work as an engineer by:identifying what inputs and outputs devices require; tinkering with a digital device • engineering their robot to make it fulfil a purpose
Children will learn: about a range of input and output devices; to write and debug a program;• to use a variety of inputs and outputs within a computer program
3. Make it, Make a Difference!
Children will learn: about the uses and implications of science, today and for the future• to broaden their scientifi c view of the world around them• make their thinking clear, both to themselves and others, through engaging in discussion about contemporary issues
