Organised Chaos Teacher Resources

This project was funded by the Science & Technologies Facilities Council and brought together scientists and primary and secondary teachers. Together they drew out and challenged public ideas about what scientists do.

The Diamond Light Source Facility a UK research facility to which scientists from across the world visit to use the special light beam to enable data to be collected that would otherwise not be possible. Find out more at

What do the resources do?

The resources provide teachers with powerpoint and teacher's notes that focus on the concept of Working Scientifically. As a strong feature of the science National Curriculum 2013 pupils are expected to find out about contemporary scientists and how they work.

These resource supports schools with a real context posed through key questions about what scientists do and how.  What scientists do? Why scientists work in the way that they do? Who else scientists work with? Where scientists work? How scientists challenge each other?

Note: The emphasis is on the scientific process and not the acceleration of electrons.

Organised Chaos resources

The 7E learning cycle is used as the framework to structure the concept development. The curriculum map provided can be adapted and should be used flexibly for different settings, lesson lengths etc. There are 7 lesson parts, each with a learning rationale which is clearly defined. An activity resource is provided and the link to real UK science in practice is exemplified.
